Student Banking for Australia

Full Australia destination guide

Australia is one of the easiest destinations to bank in before you fly. Every major bank lets you start the application online from Nepal, hold your funds, and collect your debit card from a branch once you land — usually in the same week you arrive.

Key benefits

  • No monthly account-keeping fee on student and everyday accounts
  • Free everyday electronic transactions and Osko instant transfers
  • Application completed online before you leave home
  • Large branch and ATM networks in every university city

Important details

  • Commonwealth Bank accepts applications up to three months before arrival; ANZ and NAB allow up to twelve months ahead
  • Some everyday accounts waive their fee only while a minimum is deposited each month — typically around AUD 1,000. Student accounts usually waive it outright while you are enrolled
  • You will need your passport, CoE (Confirmation of Enrolment), student visa or application reference, and an Australian address once you have one
  • Your card and internet banking are activated in a branch with your passport — allow one visit in your first week
  • Separately from your bank account, your visa requires proof of AUD 29,710 in living costs for a single student

No fees and no minimum monthly deposit

  • Classic Banking account has no monthly fee and no minimum deposit condition

  • The absent minimum-deposit condition matters if your money arrives in irregular lumps from home

Wise / Revolut
Multi-currency

For getting money out of Nepal at a fair rate

  • Mid-market exchange rate with a visible, fixed fee

Australia banking FAQs

Yes, and you should. All four major banks accept an online application before you arrive, using your passport and your CoE. The account is opened immediately; you activate the card by showing your passport at a branch after you land.

Yes. Once the account number and BSB are issued you can transfer funds in. They sit in the account until you verify your identity in a branch, at which point they become available immediately.

Not to open the account. You can apply with your Nepali address and update it once you have accommodation. You will need the Australian address before a card can be posted to you.

No. Australia does not operate a locked-funds scheme like Canada's GIC. Your visa application evidences living costs of AUD 29,710 separately, through bank statements, a loan letter, or a sponsor's documents.

Most students walk out of the branch with a card on their first visit. If it is posted instead, allow five to seven working days.
