What is the SAT Exam?
Did you know that even though most US universities are test-optional, submitting your SAT exam scores can still improve your application? Even when it is no longer mandatory to submit valid SAT scores at many universities in the USA, these scores can still strengthen your chance of admission to your preferred university and programme.
The SAT exam has long been used to enrol prospective students, both domestic and international, into undergraduate programmes across the US and Canada. Today, SAT scores give the admission committee better context about your academic readiness, discipline, and problem-solving ability.
Through this guide, we break down everything international students should know about the SAT exam before applying to universities and colleges this year.
The latest and only version of the SAT, called the Digital SAT exam, is a 2-hour and 14-minute standardised test split into two main sections: Reading and Writing, and Mathematics. The Reading and Writing section lasts 64 minutes, while the Math section lasts 70 minutes.
The Digital SAT is taken on a device at a proctored test centre. It does not apply negative marking for incorrect or unanswered questions. The SAT is scored out of 1,600, with each section scored on a scale of 200 to 800.
The updated exam also uses multistage adaptive testing. The first module in each section contains a mix of question difficulties, and your performance there influences the difficulty of the second module. This allows the exam to measure candidates more precisely across different academic levels.

The beauty of test-optional universities is that you can shape your US application strategy more intelligently. Strong SAT scores can still support scholarship, merit, and profile-building decisions when used well.

Who Can Take the Digital SAT?
As an entrance exam for undergraduate study in leading universities across the USA and Canada, the SAT does not prescribe strict eligibility criteria for test-takers.
In practice, the main requirements for international students are preparation, payment of the applicable registration and international fees, and appearing for the exam on the scheduled date under the College Board's test-day regulations.
- No fixed age limit is specified by the test administrator.
- No minimum academic qualification is formally mandated by the SAT itself.
- Students usually take the SAT while applying for undergraduate programmes.
- International candidates should keep valid identification and payment readiness in place before registering.
Digital SAT Exam Fee 2026
International students should understand both the mandatory registration fee and the additional charges that may apply when changing, cancelling, or rescheduling the test.
| Charge or Cost | SAT Fees (USD) |

| Test Centre Fees (select locations) | US $24 |

Digital SAT Exam Registration 2026
International students planning to attempt the SAT outside the USA should make sure they follow the registration process carefully and accurately.
- Find multiple testing locations: After creating your MySAT account, search for more than one verified test centre so you have alternatives if seats fill up.
- Select the preferred date: Choose a date that gives you enough preparation time, enough time to receive scores, and enough room for a retake if required.
- Complete the registration: Fill out the form exactly as your details appear on your passport and official school documents.
- Submit the photograph: Upload a valid digital photograph according to College Board requirements.
- Cross-check all information: Review every field before final submission to avoid mismatches and delays.
- Complete the payment: Pay the exam fee using an accepted credit or debit card.
- Print the admission ticket: Once payment is confirmed, download and print the ticket for test day.
Photograph Requirements for the SAT Exam
A successful registration depends on submitting an acceptable photograph. The file should be in .jpg, .gif, or .png format, and should clearly show the candidate's full face.
- Photographs taken from a mobile phone or digital camera are acceptable.
- The candidate must be easy to recognise and be the only person in the photograph.
- The image should show the head and shoulders in full view, with both eyes and hair visible.
- The photograph should be clear and free from blur, dark spots, or shadows.
- Black and white photographs are acceptable.
A photo may be rejected if one or both eyes are blocked, more than one person appears in the image, the quality is poor, lighting hides facial features, or the image has filters or edits that alter appearance.

SAT Exam Pattern and Syllabus
One of the most important steps before taking the SAT is understanding the updated exam pattern and the topics tested in each section.
SAT Exam Pattern
The SAT exam now consists of two sections: Reading and Writing, and Mathematics. The older version kept Reading and Writing separate, but the Digital SAT merges them into a single section.
SAT Reading and Writing Section
The move to the Digital SAT replaced longer passages with shorter texts of around 25 to 150 words, each followed by a single multiple-choice question. There are 54 questions in total and 64 minutes to answer them across two equal-length modules.
The Reading and Writing section is built around four content domains:
- Craft and Structure: Vocabulary in context, rhetorical analysis, and relationships between texts.
- Information and Ideas: Interpreting arguments, claims, data, and informational graphics.
- Standard English Conventions: Grammar, sentence boundaries, and usage accuracy.
- Expression of Ideas: Improving clarity, organisation, and rhetorical impact.
SAT Math Section
The Math section contains 44 questions to be answered in 70 minutes across two equal-length modules. Roughly 75% are multiple-choice and the remaining questions require student-produced responses.
Math questions are grouped into four broad areas:
- Algebra: Linear equations, functions, and inequalities in one or two variables.
- Advanced Math: Non-linear equations, systems, and functions needed for STEM and economics pathways.
- Problem-solving and Data Analysis: Ratios, percentages, probability, and interpreting quantitative information.
- Geometry and Trigonometry: Area, volume, angles, circles, right triangles, and trigonometric reasoning.
To stand a better chance of scoring high, students should prepare section-wise rather than treating the SAT as one uniform test.

Digital SAT Results and Scores
After attempting the test, SAT scores are usually available for distribution within roughly two to four weeks after the test date. Students can access their results through their College Board account, including a downloadable PDF score report.
What does the SAT score report show?
- Total SAT Score: 400 - 1,600
- SAT Reading and Writing Score: 200 - 800
- SAT Math Score: 200 - 800
Knowledge and Skills
Your SAT score PDF also includes a knowledge and skills section showing how you performed in the eight content areas across the two major sections.
- The approximate number of questions in each content area.
- The percentage of a section covered by that content area.
- A visual indicator of your performance by topic.
This type of breakdown makes it easier to understand strengths and weaknesses and plan the next preparation cycle more intelligently.
A strong score only becomes valuable when it matches the right university strategy. The same score can look highly competitive in one shortlist and average in another.

How to Prepare for the SAT Exam
The most effective SAT preparation plans combine familiarity with the digital interface, repeated timed practice, and systematic review of mistakes.
- Download the Bluebook App: Learn the interface, tools, and built-in Desmos calculator well before test day.
- Attempt an initial practice test: Use your first test to identify your current level and expose yourself to the adaptive format.
- Use official study resources: Focus on College Board and Khan Academy materials wherever possible.
- Train with the Desmos calculator: Spend a few hours learning calculator shortcuts and graphing support.
- Attempt more practice tests: Review every wrong answer carefully and resolve the question again until the logic becomes clear.
- Do a device check: Complete the exam setup in advance so the app can verify your device and generate the admission ticket.
The SAT is no longer simply a mandatory requirement. In many cases, it is a strategic profile-strengthening tool. Students who prepare with that perspective usually make better decisions around whether, when, and how to use their score.
Through the information on this page, you should now be better equipped to prepare, apply, and appear for the SAT exam this year.
