Architecture and urban planning are related but genuinely distinct. Architecture is about designing buildings, structures and spaces that work functionally, look right and hold up environmentally — houses, commercial buildings, cultural centres, the structures that define a skyline.
Urban and regional planning works at a larger scale: the development of cities, neighbourhoods, transport systems, infrastructure and community space. It means analysing population growth, traffic, environmental impact and economics to make places liveable. Both routes — B.Arch and M.Arch included — run on studio work, technical drawing, computer-aided design and site visits to real projects.

Architecture designs individual buildings and requires licensure to practise. Urban planning works on cities, transport and policy, and generally does not require a licence — professional body membership is recommended instead. Planning pays a wider range at the top end.
